Yamaha FG700S - Solid Sitka spruce top - first generation
$260.00
First, the only thing keeping the condition from being "mint" is a small surface blemish on the front, which I provided a close-up picture. It can probably be 90% removed if you know how (heat & moist cloth). This is one of those rare guitars that sounds better than all its model-mates. As musicians, we've all seen them. As a former collector, I've probably seen more than my share - both to the positive and the negative. In the case of this guitar, my daughter, who already played piano for twelve years, decided she wanted to learn guitar while away in college, and decided that my 1970, nearly perfect, vintage Gibson Hummingbird would suit her needs! That was not going to happen. However, I wanted to get her a quality entry-level guitar that she could grow with. I already knew it was going to be an FG700S, because of all the glowing reviews at the time it came out, and later! We traveled to a bigger city than ours, two hours away, and went to the largest music store there. They had fourteen FG700S's in stock. The salesman was visibly annoyed when we requested to play all fourteen of them! We did so, and this one actually sounded audibly better than the others, so we bought it. She has since played it against other FG700S's that she came across, with the same result. I don't think you'll find a guitar in her price range - or even double - that sounds better. Being the daughter of a musician, she took very good care of it, always keeping it in a case, keeping it clean and safe.As an entry-level guitar, there's not much in the way of accoutrements, but she does have a solid Sitka spruce top (unusual for entry-level) with five-ply binding and Yamaha's patented HPL back and sides in African mahogany. She also has a rosewood headstock overlay with mother-of-pearl inlays for the name and logo as well as the dots on her string pegs. The only upgrades I added were the beveling of the string pegs so the string ball sits more flush with the bridge plate for better tone & volume, and a B-compensated saddle. The top is beginning to show that nice aged patina of a vintage guitar. You'd be doing yourself a disservice if you compared this FG700S to the average one. She is the perfect guitar for a serious beginner or discriminating mid-level player on a budget. This year, for her birthday, I gifted her that 1970 Hummingbird that I bought new in August of 1970. She told me to find "Lucy" a new home with a loving owner. Are you that person? I know that I've priced this guitar near the high end of the value range, but if you could come hear it, you'd know why. It really does sound better than any other FG700S I've heard, and I've heard dozens! You either want the best sound or the lowest price. You won't find both in the same instrument. Before listing her, I did a complete tear-down, cleaning her body and fretboard, applying carnuba wax to her body and headstock, and lemon oil to her fretboard and bridge. With the bridge pin work and the new saddle, that's nearly $100 worth of work at any luthier. My daughter had just recently put new extra-light strings on her with an unwound G string, so I reinstalled those. I'm not a fan of extra-lights on an acoustic, but you know girls!
