Gibson

1964 SG Special

$4,750.00

This is a fantastic playing and sounding genuine 1964 Gibson SG Special, original in every important respect. It is one of just 1704 Specials crafted that year by Gibson in Kalamazoo. The pickguard and the tuners have been changed. The tuners, in my opinion, are an upgrade, very common back in the day: vintage Grovers, which are really smooth and precise. The neck, according to my luthier, has never been off of the guitar, nor has it been broken.1964 was the last year before they narrowed the nut. This one is 1 11/16", full-size, which is a must in my book.1961-1964 SG's are the best: They were made before, as I mentioned, the "pencil neck" narrow nut, before the big cost-cutting route under the guard (to ease manufacturing), and before they started mounting the pickups to the guard. The original chipboard faux alligator case, in decent condition, is included.Note the glue bubble on upper bout. A body crack was given an effective, but amateurish repair at some point. There’s also a superficial crack below the potentiometer cavity that is structurally insignificant.Write me for more pics if you need to see anything more closely! I am far from the world's formost expert on these guitars, so please also rely on the photos. This ’64 SG Special has otherwise aged beautifully, critically having had no neck breaks, ever. It retains the original P-90 pickups, knobs, switch tip, poker chip, Maestro short Vibrola, pots, caps, bridge, etc. Price doesn’t include shipping or insurance.
