Hemen & co

1950s Hemen Sen five string Sarod 'Baba Allaudin Khan' style

$5,000.00

This instrument was made by Hemen Sen in his Kolkata shop in the 1950s. it is a rare top model, one piece (very fine teak) 5 string (main playing strings) sarod like those favored by Baba Allaudin Khan. Hemen Sen was one of the foremost makers of sarods and many other instruments from the mid 20th century until earlier this century.this is a beautiful and relatively lightweight instrument that has tremendous responsiveness, clarity, dynamic range, and sustain. the tone is deep woody and clear with brilliant throaty highs and a haunting resonance.like many of the thin plated, and thinly carved instruments made longer ago, it has superior tone, but the instrument has bowed a bit making the action high. the plate is smooth and in good shape, but the action needs to be addressed for the instrument to be in peak playing form again.I am going to try to develop a new stringing system that utilizes a different bridge and string pathway through tubes that extend down through skin head and affix through the existing tailpiece screw holes to the tailpiece to lower the plane of the strings. not sure I'll get around to this though, grad school has started.I have priced the instrument high to keep it from disappearing too quickly. if I sell it, it must go to the right home. thank you and please send questions or start a conversation.I'm going to grad school, changing careers from being a musician and manager at a guitar store to going into social work. I'm selling a lot of the instruments I thought I never would sell. (if anyone knows any collectors interested in museum grade instruments that are pieces of history from the best makers of classical instruments from India, please message me, I have two very rare pieces I would like to find a good home for). watch my other listings to see what else comes up. thank you, please let me know if you have any questions.
